TAFE Yes Program

During Term 2 a number of Merriwa Central School students have been able to participate in the YES Program run by TAFE NSW. This program was held at the Merriwa Men’s Shed and the students would like to thank the men very much for allowing them to utilise their facilities.

Mr John Parry, the TAFE automotive teacher instructed the students. They would like to thank him for his dedication and commitment to developing the skills they will require in the automotive industry. Students would also like to thank Mrs Kearney for her support at the course on Mondays.

The course covered Workplace Health and Safety responsibilities and consequences. They covered these aspects before they started their practical work. In Stage 1 they dismantled an old vehicle. Every nut, bolt and rivet was removed until the car was just a chassis. Stage 2 involved pulling down a motor, checking all the moving parts and removing and resealing valves.

Throughout the course it was impressive to witness the enthusiasm, cooperation and communication between the students as they worked as a team. The students displayed a level of maturity,, common sense and enthusiasm that we do not get to see all the time in the classroom. They watched out for each other and reassured their peers and double-checked each procedure. They were fully absorbed in each task and often John had to ask twice tor students to ‘down tools’ for a lunch break.

The practical knowledge and skills achieved during the course was evident in each students increase in confidence.
