Year 2/3 learn about Prime Ministers and Voting

Students learning about Prime Ministers and Voting

Year 2/3 has been focusing on a quality text titled, “If I was a Prime Minister” by Beck and Robin Heiner.  The book is about a group of fictional children who provide their ideas of current laws and share their opinions on rules that they would change if they were the leader of Australia.  After reading the book, our students discussed rules that they would change if they led the country.  The question was then posed to them, “What rules would you change in our classroom?”

Students in Year 2/3 worked tirelessly to create some individual ideas for class rule changes.  The students then used these ideas to write speeches that they would present to their peers and campaign for their rules to come into effect for an afternoon session of class.

They all very much looked the part as they stood behind our school lectern and presented their speeches to classmates (all while wearing a suit jacket of course, because Prime Minister’s wear suit jackets at work).  They were then asked to cast a vote for their favourite rule that they wished to see in our classroom.

Although many students were nervous as this was one of their first public speaking experiences, I am very proud that every single child stood up and had a go.

The students put in an amazing effort with not only their writing, but also with their speeches and they should all be very proud of themselves.  Well done, Year 2/3
