On Tuesday December 3 a small group of Merriwa Central School students took advantage of the Open Day being held at Newcastle University for students in Years 8, 9 and 10. We arrived at the University at 10.15am and were met by Ryan, a student at the University. He provided a short introduction to University life and the opportunities that were available for students on campus.
We then went to the Engineering Faculty where we had a hands on workshop with electrical engineering trying to work out how to enable magnets to activate a widget spinner. We then moved onto the science workshop where students were able to look at a range of were able to look at a range of properties associated with different chemicals. The last workshop was at the Wollutuka Centre for Indigenous education and where we had a treasure hunt around the area.
The day was a great opportunity to visit a campus and look at the range of facilities available to students. The campus is like a mini village as it provides education for over 36,000 students spread over a number of campuses. The Callaghan campus has its own group of shops, sporting facilities and entertainment areas which students were amazed at.
