July 2026

28 - 30 July 2026 - Dohne Prime Lamb Competition

Students will present the Dohne wethers that they have prepared at the Dohne competition in Orange. Students will have the opportunity to increase their knowledge on how body weight, eye muscle and fat, fleece and carcass are assessed at a competition level. Students will visit MacWool on the way home.

29 July 2026 - Variety Night - Theme Around the World

Classes from K-6 along with Secondary Support students will have the opportunity to perform on stage in front of family and friends during our annual Variety Night.

29 July 2026 - Birrang L Plate Driving Program

Students will progress towards obtaining their learner's permits by working with a qualified driving instructor. Following this, they will participate in driving lessons through Birrang Driving. These lessons will provide the opportunity to drive around Merriwa under the supervision of a qualified instructor, allowing them to develop and refine their driving skills.

3 August 2026 - Spike the Echidna Puppet Show

UHSC will be presenting an engaging and interactive puppet show called Spike for K-6 students. This entertaining and fun performance will provide a wonderful opportunity for students to explore important themes of difference and belonging. The show also links to learning about the biology of Australian animals, with a special focus on the egg-laying echidna.

7 August 2026 - Biology Awabakal Fieldwork Excursion

Year 11 Biology students will travel to the Awabakal Environmental Education Centre in Dudley to participate in fieldwork activities to meet with the requirements of the Module 3 Biology Syllabus.

13 August - Winter Warrior Challenge

Students are invited to participate in the Winter Warrior Challenge, held at Lake Keepit Sport and Recreation Centre in Tamworth. This is a 15km obstacle and initiatives race.

13 August - Burn Bright Year 9

The aim of the day is to introduce the latest in leadership development and hone existing skills for Secondary students in Year 9. The day will be conducted by personnel from Burn Bright, a not-for-profit organisation which specialises in presenting wellbeing and leadership to young people.

20 August - Where There's a Will AGL Site Visit

AGL Energy have invited our Where there's a Will student leaders to attend site on Thursday, 20 August to meet with AGL leadership teams and potentially address members of the workplace regarding Upper Hunter Where there's a Will initiatives and programs.

21 August - Tenpin Bowling Competition - Support

Selected students in Primary and Secondary Support classes will travel by the Merriwa Central School bus to Dullboys Rutherford to participate in a Tenpin Bowling competition.

21 August - Yr 11 Biology Awabakal Fieldwork Excursion

Year 11 Biology students will travel to the Awabakal Environmental Education Centre in Dudley to participate in fieldwork activities to meet with the requireemnts of the Module 3 Biology Syllabus.

25 August 2026 - Young Drivers Expo Tamworth

Students will attend the Young Drivers Expo at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre. This event promotes safe driving skills, road awareness, and responsibility among young drivers. Students will participate in interactive sessions, hear from industry experts and experience practical demonstrations focused on road safety.

27 August 2026 - Winds of Joy - Silver Class

Students are invited to join an exciting day excursion to Newcastle where they will participate in a unique sailing experience. Students will have the opportunity to lern essential sailing skills, assist with steering the boat and engage in hands-on activities under the guidance of experienced instructors. Students will be wearing life jackets at all times.

28 August 2026 - Little Sprouts

Our annual Community Reading Day - Little Sprouts will be held on Friday 28 Agusut and will celebrate this year's Book Week theme, "Symphony of Stories".

Students are invited to come dressed as their favourite book character or as an element from a favourite story that helps bring the Symphone of Stories to life.

31 August, 2026 - Primary Industries Fencing Day

Primary Industries students will complete their farm and electric fencing competencies under the guidance of a local fencing contractor for the day. Students will build a new fence, put in strainer posts and stays, install gates and install an electric stand off wire. They will conduct a pre and post operational check on the tools they will use and demonstrate the correct way to transport tools

Book Week - Little Sprouts Reading Day

Date: August

Time: All day

Book Week is a special time at our school, celebrated through our Little Sprouts Community Reading Day. Students from Merriwa Central School join children from across the community to walk through town, visiting local businesses where community members read stories aloud. The day also includes visits to both the school library and the Town Library, helping foster a love of reading from an early age.

Our annual Variety Night has always been held in conjunction with Education Week and is a spectacular night to showcase the talent and dedication of both students and staff.

Festival of the Fleeces

Date: June Long Weekend

The annual Running of the Sheep is a community event that Merriwa Central School are proud to be a part of.

P&C meeting

Date: First Tuesday of every month

Time: 6:30pm

Join our vibrant P&C. Meetings are held Tuesday of every month within the term at the Merriwa RSL Club. Parents and carers are welcome to attend.
