Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Students from our Kinder-Years 6 Choir proudly represented our school at the Merriwa Combined Churches Christmas Carols in the Park on Sunday 8 December. There was an impressive turnout of students for a Sunday evening and they were all very nervous but excited to perform! They sung Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Feliz Navidad and When Christmas Comes to Town and did so beautifully.

Our Kinder-Year 6 Choir also performed earlier this week at our Presentation Day and will be performing again tomorrow at our final Kindergarten-Year 6 assembly. I would like to personally congratulate and thank every one of our talented performers for their dedication throughout the year. They have really grown together as a group, have made wonderful improvement and should be extremely proud of their achievements.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

Last Wednesday, students from Year One and the Primary Kinder-Year 6 Choir were lucky enough to attend and perform at the Merriwa Family Fun Day. The choir opened the festivities with a delightful rendition of Neil Diamond’s ‘Sweet Caroline’ before Year One took to the stage to show off their electric dance moves to ‘I’m Still Standing’. All students performed with smiles on their faces as they represented our school and they should be proud of their beautiful behaviour.

Students were thrilled to see a sneak peak of the ‘Ship-O-Fools’ circus show and they took great delight in watching the wonderful dance performances from the St Joseph’s students. Thank you to the organisers of this community event for inviting us.

'Minute to Win it' Champions

Over the last two weeks students from Kindergarten to Year 6 have had a shared experience and focus in Mathematics. All the students played a Mathematics game called ‘Minute to Win it” with a class friend. They had to quickly roll a dice, subitise the number rolled and then collect the matching number of counters. The game was fast paced and by the end of the allocated minute students collections ranged from 20 to 140 counters.

Although the game itself was a great opportunity for students to demonstrate their number skills, classroom teachers then followed on with engaging discussions and more challenging tasks involving graphs and averages.

Last Thursday, this learning then culminated as a ‘Gallery Walk’ where students ventured into every other primary classroom to observe the learning of students in all grades.

The Gallery walk was a special chance for students to celebrate their learning, challenge themselves further by seeing their peers’ efforts and curiously gather additional data so they can create further investigations. Thank you to all teachers for willingly including this game into their daily lessons and creating unique ideas for how to engage their students in rich discussions and challenging investigations.

Students have been busy this term with preparing the land for pasture production. In winter we planted oats and perennial rye grass to supplement feed for our animals. In Term 4 students will be undertaking a program in wool production. As a result the school had to sell the dorper sheep which are bred for meat only and purchased the white Suffolk sheep which are dual purpose (meat and wool).

If you drive past the school farm you will notice that the scarecrows are back again. The scarecrow program is managed by our Year 7/8 Technology students. We at Merriwa Central School do take our Agriculture very seriously and as a result this subject has proved to be popular amongst our students.

The Steer Team have been busy preparing the steers for the Merriwa Show which will be held in September 20, 21 and 22.

We value the support we receive from the local community and those in the agricultural sector.

I would like to acknowledge Mr Col Bates for his continued support in our programs especially in animal production. Mr Tim Sawley, our agronomist from Landmark is also acknowledged for supporting agriculture education at our school especially in plant production. Other local businesses such as Elders and CRT Merriwa are also acknowledged for their support in providing goods and services to the agriculture faculty at our school.

This week in Science

In Science students have been busy observing and interpreting the natural world and making models to reflect their understanding. During their cells topic, year 7 constructed animal and plant cell models from edible ingredients. Various cakes were baked along with lollies in jelly to build these models. These were then shared and eaten, of course. Year 10 have taken to the conceptually difficult topic of genetics, aiming to understand how DNA is the base unit in heredity and the blueprint for the structures, functions and features of our bodies. Later this term Year 7 gear up again to construct more models, this time of the solar system, as they study the earth, moon and sun and our place in space. As always science is about takin an interest in our world, how it works, and being able to share our knowledge with others.

One of the many wonderful opportunities our Central School offers is a program called “Whole School Staffing”. Secondary teachers are timetabled to work with primary classes throughout the year, to share their subject expertise and to team teach and gain skills from their primary counterparts.

This term, we have Mr Kurt Schwab, who is teaching Physical Education with Miss Garbellini in Kindergarten and Mr Daniel Berzsenyi who is sharing his Science knowledge with Miss Eather and Year 1.

Mr James worked with Year 2/3 on African drumming earlier this term, in preparation for Variety Night and today has begun working with Year 4/5. Over the coming weeks, the children from this class will be walking up to the secondary campus each Thursday during lunch, and will participate in agriculture related activities, including vegetable gardening and chook care, during the afternoon session.

The children will leave primary campus at 1.30pm each Thursday for the rest of this term, and will be back in time for afternoon assembly. They will be supervised by Mrs Courtney Martin and assisted by Mrs Kelly Elliot, SLSO.

Girls Rugby League 7's success

Under 14’s Girls 9’s Rugby League

On August 20, Merriwa Central School’s Under 14 Girls Rugby League Team travelled to Windale to compete in the annual Caitlin Moran Shield. While all of the girls are top league tag players, for many, this was their tackle football debut, and they were nervous, yet excited, to show their stuff out there on the field.

From the outset, the team suffered a few setbacks. The competition was originally meant to take place two weeks prior, and we were all disappointed when we received the news that it had been washed out a few kilometres out of Denman. On the day, our star halfback Josie Porter was out due to a knee injury, and rookie Shaydene Saunders could not compete as she was sick, so we were left with a team of only seven girls in a nine-a-side comp. Thankfully, the day’s designated water girl, versed league tag player Samantha Bristow, strapped on her boots and decided to take the field at the last minute to give us a fighting chance.

The first game of the day was against Irrawang High School and despite being one player short, the girls from Merriwa Central School really held their own. Highlights of the game were Brooklyn Blackadder, the pocket rocket fullback, running the whole field to score two tries, tries from Ildi Papp and Natasha Marsh, and some big hits from Isabella Blades-Garden on the wing. The Merriwa girls managed to pull off an impressive 16-4 win – a great feat for a small central school.

Unfortunately, Isabella injured her wrist in a tackle and was unable to compete for the rest of the day, leaving us yet another player short for the coming games.

In the next two games, Merriwa Central School continued to play with dignity, skill and an incredible sense of team spirit. After suffering a defeat against the St Catherine’s Singleton side, Merriwa pulled it together for the last game to win 12-8 against Tomaree High. This placed the girls second overall in their bracket.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of the girls for their fantastic effort on the day. They were an absolute testament to the values of Merriwa Central School, with members of the public and the competition organisers even commenting on their sense of sportsmanship and playing skill. I would also like to thank the P&C for generously funding our new uniforms. The girls looked fantastic out on the field and left a great impression of our school out in the wider community. Additionally, thank you to Mr Chad Grant and Mr Patrick Lomax for assisting with the excursion planning and showing me the ropes of the rugby coordinator position. Even from up north, Mr Grant continues to assist and guide me and I hope we have made him proud with our efforts. Finally, I would like to thank the organisers of the event for being so welcoming to us and for ensuring the day ran smoothly. It is great to see the promotion of women’s sport in the community, and it is even better to see that students from Merriwa Central School have the opportunity to participate in these kinds of events.

Battle of Long Tan

During the many battles fought during the Vietnam War, one that is remembered with significance is the Battle of Long Tan. Many attended Memorial Services throughout Australia as did Merriwa RSL Sub Branch with a service held Sunday August 1l8 at 11.00am.

Harrison Amidy represented Merriwa Central School SRC with a touching speech that affected all that attended the service. Below is the written transcript of what a young 16 year old took from his knowledge of the Vietnam War and the Battle of Long Tan.

War is a troubling subject for me to talk about. I find it a great honour to be able to represent my school for this event, but writing this speech was quite the task for me. I would never want to stain the legacy of our fallen and current soldiers with my words, I don’t think I could forgive myself if I did. War should never be glorified but it does deserve the utmost respect. I can only hope that my words can give the justice our brave soldiers deserve.

The battle of Long Tan was one of the most publicised battles of the Vietnam War. Even 50 years later we acknowledge their valiant efforts to save one another. Our Australian soldiers fought for the mates by their side, their family’s at home, their allies and their country. Some would call this battle a great victory, it showed that Australia and its allies would do whatever it takes to reinforce soldiers in need. 18, too many died that battle, but this devastation could have strangled our country much more than it did.

At 4.00pm on August 18, 1966 Lieutenant Gordon Sharp was forced to ground when they were ambushed under heavy fire. While the 11 platoons engaged in conflict, Lieutenant Geoff Kendal received orders to assist with his 10 platoons. On their way they were side-lined before they could assist their fellow Infantry. Our American allies tried performing an air strike but were only successful in dropping supplies. At 6.00pm the union of the two Lieutenants gave them a fighting chance. With plentiful determination the Australian army achieved a stunning victory as darkness fell at 7.00pm when reinforcements arrived from afar.

This battle, at least personally, isn’t about how we triumphed over our enemy of the past, but how Australia does not shiver in their boots in the face of adversity, how we will not leave a man down, and tackle problems head on. Even throughout a perilous conflict Australia showed what shapes this nation, mateship.

Lest we forget

On the Primary Campus last Friday all classes celebrated NAIDOC Day. Each class participated in various activities during the day and also enjoyed a special recess and lunch provided by our fabulous P&C Canteen.

There were five activities provided for the enrichment of the students’ understanding of Indigenous culture. These were: Aboriginal Story time, boomerang decorating, Indigenous games, mosaic rainbow serpent and a collage of Uluru.

All the students enjoyed themselves and the biggest hits of the day were the Indigenous games with Mr Davies and Mrs Martin, followed closely by the decorating of the boomerangs. The level of artistic flair shown by the students was outstanding and all of the artwork was very well executed.

Recess brought a special treat of handmade damper and honey with hot milo. There was a very definite show of thumbs up when the students were asked if they were enjoying this treat. The students were able to take their artwork home to share with the families. The Rainbow Serpent Mosaics will be on display in the Primary office foyer in the next week for parents to view.

Overall the day was a big success and was valued by students and staff. I would like to thank all the staff for their support of the activities and their creative input which enhanced the delivery of the activities, making the day that much more enjoyable for the students.

It is important that students attend school every day possible (excluding when sick) to maximise learning opportunities. Parents are reminded that absence notes should be returned within three days, otherwise they are corded as unjustified on the Department’s attendance system.

TAFE Yes Program

During Term 2 a number of Merriwa Central School students
have been able to participate in the YES Program run by TAFE NSW. This program
was held at the Merriwa Men’s Shed and the students would like to thank the men
very much for allowing them to utilise their facilities.

Mr John Parry, the TAFE automotive teacher instructed the
students. They would like to thank him for his dedication and commitment to
developing the skills they will require in the automotive industry. Students
would also like to thank Mrs Kearney for her support at the course on Mondays.

The course covered Workplace Health and Safety
responsibilities and consequences. They covered these aspects before they
started their practical work. In Stage 1 they dismantled an old vehicle. Every
nut, bolt and rivet was removed until the car was just a chassis. Stage 2
involved pulling down a motor, checking all the moving parts and removing and
resealing valves.

Throughout the course it was impressive to witness the
enthusiasm, cooperation and communication between the students as they worked
as a team. The students displayed a level of maturity,, common sense and
enthusiasm that we do not get to see all the time in the classroom. They
watched out for each other and reassured their peers and double-checked each
procedure. They were fully absorbed in each task and often John had to ask
twice tor students to ‘down tools’ for a lunch break.

The practical knowledge and skills achieved during the
course was evident in each students increase in confidence.

He has made a significant contribution to our students and staff as a school leader across many areas. Next term he will join his family on the North Coast and take up a position at Bowraville Central School. He has left big shoes to fill, and on behalf of staff and students I wish Mr Grant well in his new position.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Primary Student Leadership team and staff attended CWA's International Day at CWA, Merriwa.
They organised a great luncheon featuring food from Papua New
Guinea.

Students from
Merriwa Central School, under the guidance of Mrs Martin, had been researching
Papua New Guinea and had completed posters for the event.

The posters which adorned the
walls of the CWA hall were all of a high standard reflecting the work of
students and staff.

Guest speaker Emily Gribble of
UNICEF outlined some of the projects UNICEF has developed to support the
communities in Papua New Guinea. These
projects were life changing demonstrating the importance of ongoing health care
advances and access to quality health care.
The students spoke about their learning experiences and the steps they
undertook to complete the poster.

My compliments to the catering
team for giving us a taste of Papua New Guinea.
Thanks to the organising committee for hosting Merriwa Central School at
this marvellous event.

National simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association ( ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. Now in its nineteenth successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas. This Year’s Book is, ‘Alpacas with Maracas’ by Matt Cosgrove. Students enjoyed learning about the adventures of two alpacas Macca and Al, who decide to enter a talent show. All students in Kinder-Year 6 at Merriwa Central School participated on Wednesday May 22 at 11.00am by reading this wonderful book in their classes.

Chess Competitors Success

Our students (Benjamin Nebauer, Jackson Keane, Harrison Amidy, Christian Beveridge, Thomas Bates, Koda Cashen, James Taylor-Stacey, Thomas Amidy & Damien Constable) were competing against 136 other competitors across 6 games. It was not a knock-out tournament which meant that all participants would play 6 games regardless of their performance.

This excursion had two goals:

1. To provide Merriwa Central School students a chance to represent our school in an activity they are enthusiastic about

2. To provide our students the opportunity to compete against skilled opponents that they had never faced before to learn more about the game

Our results speak for themselves. The majority of our students scored 3 out of a maximum of 6 points which, in chess, is a remarkable feat for students competing in their first tournament. Merriwa Central School was the fourth highest point scoring school at the event competing with the likes of Newcastle private schools.

The crowning achievement of the day however does go to Benjamin Nebauer. His skill at the game has come a very long way in 12 short months and it was on display for all to see in Newcastle. His final game of the day - which he states had him more nervous than playing footy - saw him facing off a very skilled opponent that he had befriended hours earlier. This opponent even beat me in a friendly game before their match. It was a thrilling match to watch but Benjamin triumphed and ended the day undefeated with 5.5 points out of 6 (1 drawn game gave him half a point). This placed Benjamin 2nd overall.

The magnificent performance of all of our students in their first ever chess tournament, as well as the class and responsibility they all showed while representing our school, is not to be understated and may be a hint at what is to come in the next few years.

On Monday, a group of student leaders from Year 6 travelled to Dubbo to participate in the GRIP Leadership Conference. It was also terrific to share the day with the school captains from Cassilis Public School, Sophie and Dylan.

Lilly, Annabelle, Makayla, Makayla and Neveah represented Merriwa Central School very proudly and made many new friends amongst the 540 girls and boys from 46 other schools in Western Districts.

The girls participated in five leadership sessions with the over-riding goal to recognise that leadership is about people, not position or power. They learned about the four character traits of a leader, and reflected on how they could make a difference back at Merriwa Central school.

“The day taught me that it’s my responsibility to be the best I can to other people” – Makayla Mobberley

“Confidence and being humble can go together” – Annabelle Orton

“Our school can have its own spirit” – Makaylah Coles

“I can be a good leader just by listening more” – Lily Swan

“You don’t have to be a loud person to be a great leader “ – Neveah Fetoai

Year 2/3 learn about Prime Ministers and Voting

Year 2/3 has been focusing on a quality text titled, “If I was a Prime Minister” by Beck and Robin Heiner. The book is about a group of fictional children who provide their ideas of current laws and share their opinions on rules that they would change if they were the leader of Australia. After reading the book, our students discussed rules that they would change if they led the country. The question was then posed to them, “What rules would you change in our classroom?”

Students in Year 2/3 worked tirelessly to create some individual ideas for class rule changes. The students then used these ideas to write speeches that they would present to their peers and campaign for their rules to come into effect for an afternoon session of class.

They all very much looked the part as they stood behind our school lectern and presented their speeches to classmates (all while wearing a suit jacket of course, because Prime Minister’s wear suit jackets at work). They were then asked to cast a vote for their favourite rule that they wished to see in our classroom.

Although many students were nervous as this was one of their first public speaking experiences, I am very proud that every single child stood up and had a go.

The students put in an amazing effort with not only their writing, but also with their speeches and they should all be very proud of themselves. Well done, Year 2/3

With the pressure you face during Year 12, it’s easy to forget it’s just another year in life. If you are like many students, you are prioritising your studies – but aiming for good marks doesn’t mean you give up the things you love.

Tahli accepts 1st place at the Harding Miller Education Awards

On the 14th of May my Mum and I set off on our little adventure to Sydney for my Harding Miller Education Foundation awards night. We arrived at the Song hotel in Sydney a bit after 2 pm (no thanks to the car GPS which decided to freeze, without us noticing, when we were in the middle of Sydney). We dropped off our luggage quickly and went to explore the big city.

Mum and I walked to Darling Harbour and then we went to Sydney Sea Life Aquarium and looked at different aquatic animals. After we went to Sea Life Mum and I walked across the Pyrmont Bridge and then walked through China Town on our way back to the hotel. When we were walking back we found a nice restraint where we decided to have dinner.

After we had finished dinner it was fairly late and our feet were aching from all the walking we had done but we still hadn’t quite finished exploring for that day so we decided to catch a train to Circular Quay and we saw the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. After that we were both very tired so we went back to our hotel for what we thought was a well-earned rest.

The next morning before I had to go to Town Hall for my scholarship, mum and I went to do more exploring. We walked to the botanical gardens and looked at different plants and different gardens. While we were there we met some people who had a weaving shop. They gave us a demonstration of weaving and taught us how to set up the thread on the machine. They then showed us what the finished product looks like.

When we finished at the Botanical Gardens we walked back through Hyde Park to get to the hotel so I could get dressed and ready to go to Town Hall for my awards night. Once I was all dressed up in the formal Merriwa School uniform, it was time to go down to the hotel lobby. When I was there I met with all the other girls who had had also received the Harding Miller Education scholarship and we all walked with a staff member from Harding Miller to Sydney Town Hall.

When we got there we went to the Marconi Room and we received a bag and a few sheets of paper and a couple of puzzles that we had to fill out throughout the day. Then we were split into groups of two or three people and we had to go to all different learning stations around the room.

I was in a group with a girl named Elizabeth and we first went to a station that had mathematical activities that we had to do. After we finished at the maths station we went to some different activities around the room, some of these included; the google stand, strive online tutoring, cluey tutoring and more. Throughout the day I met many more girls and created some more friendships with some of them.

At around 3pm we had our stage rehearsals where we practised what we were going to have to do that night. After rehearsals we all went back to the Marconi room to socialise more and to complete our puzzles. When we were all finished, our personal coaches arrived and I was finally able to meet my coach Anita Geluk. After introducing ourselves to our coaches, we went to have dinner with them and get to know each other a bit and learn some things about each other.

When dinner was over we listened to some speeches, including a speech from the director of the Harding Miller Education Foundation- Cara Varian. After speeches, we went back into the hall because the awards night was about to begin. A lot of people were awarded scholarships for anything from academics to musical scholarships. We also watched some amazing performances by the Southern Stars performers. Craig Foster was also there and we listened to him give a speech. When the night was over I went and met with mum and Miss Golden and we got photos of me with my certificate.

The next morning we got up early and started packing up all of our things and getting ready for our trip home. Before we left though we went for one last walk around the city and then we packed up the car and started what felt like a long trip home. That was the end of our little adventure to Sydney for my Harding Miller Education Foundation awards night.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

Tips for Acing Year 12

Year 12 can put a lot of pressure on you, but think about this: ‘whatever your goals may be for the future, keep in mind that there are many paths to the top of the mountain, but the view is the same’. That’s some pretty sound advice from Phil Newnham, a teacher and careers practitioner in a large government school in Melbourne’s east. Phil also recommends you ‘plan for your future but don’t let it get in the way of a successful Year 12 – nothing is final; there are always other options’.

http://this.deakin.edu.au/study/how-to-ace-year-12

Creating New Habits for Study Success

It’s one thing to know you need to use certain study strategies and techniques (eg create mind maps, break your work down into small chunks and review your notes regularly). But knowledge of these strategies is only the starting point.

Next you have to apply these strategies. You need to build these strategies into your daily routine.

http://learningfundamentals.com.au/blog/creating-new-habits-for-study-success/

Last Friday, Kindergarten students visited the Merriwa Colonial Museum for their very first excursion. They were so excited and couldn't walk there fast enough! We were greeted by Michael and Brian of Merriwa's Historical Society who took the time to give us a very interesting and engaging tour of the cottage and all of its historical artefacts.

Students were impressed by the many heirlooms we were shown, ranging from immaculate original telephones, sewing machines and typewriters to rabbit and dingo traps. They were delighted when they were able to each have a turn using a butter churner and a very old manual washing machine. This was a fantastic opportunity for Kindergarten to learn about our town's past and to appreciate how fortunate we are to have modern conveniences.

Thank you to Brian and Michael for looking after us so well and for your fascinating stories during our visit. Well done to Kindergarten for their beautiful manners throughout the entire visit and for representing our school so proudly.

Mock Interviews

On Thursday March 28 Year 10 students at Merriwa Central School were provided with the opportunity to participate in a mock interview. Students had to apply for a position of their choice and produce a cover letter and resume and attend an interview based on that position.

Four community members volunteered in their time to interview the students and provide them with some pointers of what to do and not to do in an interview. Students found the experience daunting at first and some were very nervous but the benefit gained by putting themselves forward and attending the interview session will assist them in the future with their career interviews.

Merriwa Central School would like to thank the interviews, Maria Cameron, Tash Taaffe, Mike Gilder and Rowan Rodgers for donating their time to assist our students with these skills. They enjoyed the opportunity to meet and get to know some of our Year 10 students and were impressed by the broad range of talents and interests Year 10 students displayed.

Marvellous Maths is alive and well at Merriwa Central School! Last week, 15 families and 30 children spent a magical evening back at school learning to have fun with Maths!

We are so fortunate to have the talent of Mr Marcus Garrett, from AMSI (Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute) working with staff and students across both campuses to enrich and engage us all in Maths.

Thanks so much to Mr Garrett, our Principal Mr Noonan, and to the primary teaching staff, who put many hours of preparation into this fantastic opportunity and then came along on the night.

We are already planning our next fun evening of learning for families – watch this space!

Year 2/3 have been achieving amazing things in their first learning experiences with Mrs Martin's technology programs. As the photos show, the children have been doing their best to get up close and personal with their little robots and have been learning some excellent early coding skills along the way.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

We spoke with a group of Kindergarten students to find out what they had to say about going against the herd. They had some wise words for us on how we can care, respect and support each other in our schools.

Let’s start the year off right and prevent student bullying happening in our playgrounds, classrooms and online. If a group of 5-year-olds know the difference between right and wrong, shouldn’t everyone?

Port Macquarie and Newcastle Excursion

Newcastle and Port Stephens Excursion Report

On the 5 December, Mr Lomax, Mr Austin and Mrs Jones took twenty-one year 10 students and twenty-three year 6 students to port Stephens for a three day excursion.

Day one we caught a bus to Newcastle. Year 10 accompanied by Mr Lomax and Mr Austin completed the Unexpected Exit activity. We were divided into two groups. The first group of 12 went into ‘The Terror Cell’ and the second group of 11 went into ‘The Deranged Scientist.’ Both activities were really challenging and it took us about an hour to complete them. We all had lots of fun trying to escape! Year 6 with Mrs Jones went on a walking tour of Newcastle ran by ‘Newcastle Afoot’ they learnt a lot of things about the history of Newcastle. After that we headed to ‘The Retreat Port Stephens’ we unpacked got settled and when it hit dark Year 10, Mr. Lomax and Mr. Austin played an intense game of commando, board games, then we hit the hay.

Day two we left at 10am on Thursday morning to travel to Nelson Bay to go on a dolphin watching cruise. We got on the sail boat and headed out to sea. We saw a few dolphins on our way out, after a while they put a net into the water so we could be closer to the dolphins. It was a great experience even though it was so windy! After an hour and a half we headed back to shore. Year 10, Mr Lomax and Mr Austin went for lunch at Hog’s Breath and Year 6 and Mrs Jones had Subway for lunch. We had a great time at the marina. After lunch we went to Anna Bay where we went 4wding on Stockton Beach. We saw some interesting things along the way! Firstly we were taken to ‘tin city’ where shipwrecked sailors from the war had built a community on the beach. We were also shown how to collect fresh drinking water under the sand. We spent some time digging up pipis and we finished off with sand boarding down the sand dunes. It was a blast besides getting sand everywhere. When we got back to The Retreat everyone was keen to wash the sand off. Year 6 had a game of hide n seek before it got dark and Year 10 again played an intense game commando and board games then we all went to bed.

Day three was our last day. We got up nice and early to pack our bags to go home. We headed into Newcastle to complete one last activity. Year 10, Mr Lomax and Mr Austin completed the ‘Newcastle Afoot’ tour where we walked around Queens Wharf, Honeysuckle and Newcastle Beach. We learnt a lot about the convict history of Newcastle as well as enjoyed some downtime at the beach before heading back to Merriwa. Year 6 and Mrs Jones went to the Newcastle museum where they got to play around with lots of interactive things. It was all really fun and interesting. After that, we started travelling home. After a quick stop at Singleton for lunch we headed back to Merriwa.

We would like to thank Mr. Lomax for all of his hard work to organise the excursion for us. We would also like to thank Mr Austin and Mrs Jones for coming along to help with everything.

Our hardworking canteen ladies were thrilled to receive the news about a grant application they had made earlier in the year. Last week it was announced that the application to upgrade canteen equipment was successful with $12,472 allocated to the P&C run canteens in primary and secondary.

Local member Michael Johnson visited the secondary canteen to see first hand the difference the grant will make to the facilities for our students. The application will allow for new ovens, pie warmers and fridges to be purchased which will make a huge difference for our canteen ladies.

Keep an eye out for the next fundraising event for the P&C which is the Christmas ham raffles. See link below
